ALL THAT GLISTENS ISN’T GOLDEN

As a black person, I take exception to the talk of a golden age in America just after World War II (And I Quote: “The Day Before Yesterday” by Michael Elliott, Book Review, July 28). A golden age for whom? I seem to recall lynchings, burning crosses, bombed churches and schools, officially segregated housing, health care and education; and no voting rights, even for those blacks who served or were injured in World War II.

Americans have selective memories, especially when it comes to history. And with the new wave of racists climbing out from under their rocks every day, this is not surprising. But remember, what was the golden age for some Americans was the dark age for others.
