Arena Dreams

A proposal to bring the Lakers and Kings to a new, $200-million downtown arena should be approached cautiously, City Councilman Joel Wachs said Saturday. “I’d love to have them there,” said Wachs, who represents the East Valley. “But I’m not about to spend L.A. taxpayer money on people making $20 million bucks. . . . “I’d rather give it to teachers.” (B1)

Not a Drop to Drink

About 50 North Hollywood homes went without water for several hours Saturday when a water main near Fulton Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard broke and flooded the street, creating a 20-by-20-foot sinkhole. Authorities cordoned off the area around the hole about 2:30 p.m. to let workers repair the 8-inch-diameter main, said Walter Zeisl, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
