Tobacco Suit

Re “Former Smoker Wins Pivotal Tobacco Case,” Aug. 10:

Finally a litigant has found a jury with the gumption to award damages against a tobacco company because his consumption of its product has proved detrimental to his health. Let us hope that this decision stands on appeal.

However, for the long haul, this legal assault on the tobacco industry is far too uncertain of resolution and far too dilatory of execution. Therefore, a situation like this cries out for federal legislation. Legislation that will shut down the tobacco factories, will confiscate their properties and assets, and will incarcerate for long jail terms their corporate heads for crimes against humanity. Only then will our society be rid of this bane upon its collective good health.
