WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Named Gus Frerotte the starter over Heath Shuler. Frerotte was a seventh-round pick in 1994 when Heath Shuler was the team’s No. 1 selection.
* PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Named Jim Miller the starter over Mike Tomczak and Kordell Stewart. Miller was the No. 3 quarterback last season to Neil O’Donnell (now with the New York Jets) and Tomczak.
* NEW YORK GIANTS
Released Tommy Maddox, leaving Stan White and Danny Kanell to back up starter Dave Brown.
* PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Expect Rodney Peete to sit out the season opener because of a sprained knee suffered in Sunday’s exhibition loss to New England. Ty Detmer replaces Peete as the starter.
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS
San Francisco 49ers obtained running back Terry Kirby from the Miami Dolphins. . . . Chicago Bears lost defensive lineman Chris Zorich for the season.
