Wrongful Death Suit Against Rapper Settled
Rap artist Snoop Doggy Dogg has reached a confidential out-of-court settlement in a civil suit accusing him of wrongful death in the 1993 shooting of a 20-year-old man.
The settlement was announced Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court prior to the start of trial on the lawsuit. Judge David Perez accepted the agreement and was expected to formally dismiss the lawsuit next month.
The suit was filed by the family of Philip Woldemariam, who was shot to death Aug. 25, 1993, in a confrontation with the rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, and a bodyguard.
Edi M.O. Faal, an attorney for the Woldemariam family, called the settlement amicable. The family had originally sought $25 million in damages.
“I think both sides felt that it was in their best interests to enter into the settlement that was reached,” he said. “That’s all I can say.”
David Kenner, an attorney for Broadus, did not immediately return a message left at his office Tuesday.
