Alexander Replaces Sabins as Canyon Coach

Robert Alexander has been named to replace Steve Sabins, who has resigned as Canyon High boys’ basketball coach, Athletic Director Steve Anderson said Wednesday.

Alexander, 29, was an assistant coach at USC last year after coaching Ontario High from 1993-95.

Sabins won 152 games in 12 seasons. His best season was last year when Canyon advanced to the second round of the Division II playoffs and finished 21-7.

Sabins will continue teaching at the school and working with the lower-level boys’ basketball teams.

“He decided it was time to work on other stuff,” Anderson said. “He [is] a very popular and well-liked teacher and coach.”

Individual game tickets for the Mighty Ducks’ four home exhibition games will go on sale Friday.

Tickets will be available at 10 a.m. at the Pond box office and TicketMaster locations. Tickets may also be purchased by calling TicketMaster. The exhibition schedule: Sept. 15 vs. Kings; Sept. 18 vs. New York Rangers; Sept. 25 vs. Pittsburgh Penguins; Sept. 27 vs. Boston Bruins.

Wisconsin, the defending national champion, will participate in the Reebok Invitational men’s soccer tournament beginning Aug. 30 in Titan Stadium at Cal State Fullerton. The Badgers, 24-1 last season, will play San Diego at 5 p.m. on the first day, followed by Fullerton vs. Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. On Sept. 1, San Diego plays Western Kentucky at 5 p.m. and Fullerton meets Wisconsin at 7 p.m.

The women’s tournament begins Aug. 31, with Loyola Marymount playing San Diego State at 5 p.m. and Fullerton meeting Fresno State at 7 p.m. On Sept. 2, San Diego State plays Fresno State at 4 p.m. and Fullerton plays Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children.

Luke Fox of Golden West College and Kevin Moore of Long Beach State plan to play for Southern California College, SCC baseball Coach Kevin Kasper said.

Fox, a Fountain Valley graduate, played left field and first base. Moore, from Beverly Hills High, is an outfielder. Both players will be juniors and will start the fall semester.
