Longshoremen’s Union Defeats Tentative Pact: The three-year contract was passed 3,574 to 3,242, but did not gain the 60% of International Longeshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union votes needed for approval, according to union officials. While the agreement offered a 13% pay increase in the base hourly wage over three years, it would have outlawed the bonuses that some longshoremen received for being particularly productive. Also, contract language designed to expand the union’s authority over waterfront jobs was not strong enough to satisfy the membership, union leaders said. Negotiators for the union and the Pacific Maritime Assn., which represents steamship lines, stevedoring companies and other harbor employers in collective bargaining, will return to the table to work out a new deal. West Coast ports are included under the settlement.
