A Cal State Northridge student was killed Thursday when the car he was driving, possibly at 80 mph, struck a tree, police said.

The accident occurred about 5 p.m. on Chatsworth Street just west of Wilbur Avenue, said Sgt. Mel Cunningham of the LAPD Valley Traffic division.

The driver was identified as 19-year-old Justin Walden, a student who worked part time at a Sears Roebuck and Co. store, Cunningham said.

A witness told officials Walden was driving at a “high rate of speed,” Cunningham said. Cunningham estimated that “on the conservative side,” the yellow 1965 Mustang could have been going as fast as 80 mph when Walden lost control.
