CHP Seeks Help of Motorists for Clues in Fatal Collision

New eyewitness accounts may help authorities identify the driver whose unsafe lane change on the westbound Artesia Freeway caused a fatal collision in Cerritos, California Highway Patrol investigators said.

Witnesses have been unable to recall the license number, make or color of the vehicle that cut off Sadie Boogard’s 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer about 4 p.m. Tuesday, causing her to lose control and crash into another car whose passenger later died of her injuries.

“It’s a car,” CHP public information officer Gary Montanez said. “That’s all we have.”

He said that Boogard, an 18-year-old Bellflower resident, was driving just east of Gridley Road when the car suddenly veered toward her in the No. 5 lane. Turning sharply to the right to avoid a collision, Boogard tried to straighten out the car by going left, Montanez said. Boogard was unable to regain control of the Jeep and careened toward the carpool lane, where she crashed into Dimas Garcia’s 1986 Nissan pickup.
