Honors Planned for Olympic Athletes

Athletes from Irvine who participated in Olympic Games from 1968 through 1996 are being asked to contact the city so they can be recognized at a special ceremony next month.

Athletes who lived in Irvine or attended school there during the time of their participation in an Olympic event may call (714) 724-6732 by Sept. 3. Anyone who knows an athlete who meets those criteria may also notify the city.

All such athletes will be honored on Sept. 15 at a public ceremony titled “Irvine Honors Our Olympians.” The event is being sponsored by the city, Irvine Unified School District, UC Irvine and Irvine Chamber of Commerce.

The athletes’ names will be engraved on a plaque that will be installed in the piazza at the Irvine Civic Center.
