You Don’t Need to Keep a Scowl in Golf Bag

Jim Murray’s article on Ernie Els [Aug. 18] seemed to display a slight misunderstanding of how golfers play the game from a mental standpoint. While there are many, such as Ben Hogan and Corey Pavin, who are very intense during a round, there are also many successful golfers who take a laid-back approach, such as Peter Jacobsen and Lee Trevino. It is Ernie Els’ unflappable style to express few of his emotions. Furrowing his brow or throwing a club aren’t part of his repertoire, as Mr. Murray suggested they should be.
