An academic test score for the Miami Hurricanes’ top freshman football recruit is being challenged, leaving in doubt his status for this season.

Linebacker Nathaniel Webster, an All-American at Miami Northwestern High School, was removed from practice pending a review of a possible irregularity in his American College Test qualifying score.

ACT officials will give Webster 14 days to present evidence showing that his score should be considered valid.

If Webster enrolls in classes, which begin Thursday, and his score is invalidated, he cannot play this year or be a redshirt. He also cannot retake the test. Miami risks forfeiting games if Webster plays and is later ruled a non-qualifier.

Mississippi State Coach Jackie Sherrill said he will not take disciplinary action against three players charged with malicious mischief for allegedly breaking a woman’s car window. Quarterback Derrick Taite, linebacker Dwayne Curry and tailback Keffer McGee are free on their own recognizance pending a Sept. 5 court date. . . . Paul Turner, who was Colorado State’s leading receiver in 1995, has been suspended for the season because of his grades, Coach Sonny Lubick said.
