Take the Plunge With the Deepest Cut of All

The Look: The V neck has dropped to new depths this fall. Unless you’re fairly flat-chested, these Halston-type knit dresses require an equally low-cut bra.

Calvin Klein did his deep-V-neck dress, with an extra long self-belt, in a graphite-colored rayon and nylon Lurex knit. On tall and slender women, the look is very sexy. (The designer’s sportswear also took a dip for fall, with blouses left all but open and sweater necklines dipping dangerously close to the waist.) But for those who don’t want to show that much skin, there are several more modest versions. The pictured design is $1,110 at Nordstom in Los Angeles and the Calvin Klein boutique at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.

The plunging V design is also being done by such modestly priced labels as Trilogy by Rampage. The long black dress in rayon matte jersey will arrive in Rampage stores in late October, priced at $120. Unlike silk matte knits, rayon matte jersey doesn’t stretch, but it does need to be dry-cleaned. Rampage, which is scheduled to open a new store at South Coast Plaza around Thanksgiving, has a selection of other knit dresses, long and short, now in stock.
