Rod Woodson missed most of the heavy contact work in practice but is listed as probable for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season opener Sunday in Jacksonville.

The six-time Pro Bowl cornerback sat out all but two games last season because of a torn ligament in his right knee. He returned to play in the Super Bowl and has had no serious problems with the knee since training camp began in July.

The Steelers want Woodson to avoid pushing himself in practice so he doesn’t put too much wear and tear on the surgically repaired knee. Woodson denied the knee must be drained periodically to reduce fluid buildup.

With high-priced free agent tackles Jumbo Elliott and David Williams hurting, the New York Jets signed James Parrish to bolster their offensive line.

Parrish, 28, played for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, but was cut this summer. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Parrish started one game in 1995.

To make room for Parrish, the Jets cut center-guard John Bock, who has been bothered by a knee injury. Elliott has a groin problem and Williams suffered back spasms on Wednesday. Neither Elliott nor Williams had good preseasons, with injuries limiting their practice time and playing time in exhibition games.

The San Diego Chargers have sold enough tickets to lift the local television blackout of their home opener Sunday at Jack Murphy Stadium against the Seattle Seahawks.
