New DNA Test Used in Rape Conviction

A jury in Chattanogga, Tenn., convicted a man of raping and murdering a 4-year-old girl in a trial that was the first in a U.S. court to use a new form of DNA testing. The sequestered jury deliberated four hours before finding Paul Ware guilty of felony murder in the death of Lindsey Green two years ago. Ware, 27, could face the death penalty. A sentencing hearing began today. Unlike most DNA found in a cell’s nucleus, mitochondrial DNA is found in the fluid outside the nucleus. It carries its own genetic code and is passed only from mother to child. Prosecutors said it allows more precise matching than traditional DNA fingerprinting.
