Alfredo Perez
I am visiting from Arizona with my wife, who is a former LAUSD teacher. We were appalled to read in the article, “Teacher Continues Remarkable Recovery” (Sept. 4), that Alfredo Perez had run out of insurance benefits and had to go to a public hospital. [Perez, a fifth-grade teacher, was struck in the brain by a stray bullet while teaching last winter.] From experience, we know that the Los Angeles Unified School District has excellent health benefits. His wife, as a teacher, should also have her benefits to which Perez could be added.
On top of which, there are workers’ compensation and LAUSD’s liability insurance. There is no reason in the world that this unfortunate man, while doing one of the most important jobs in our modern world, should want for the best care available. Have a heart, LAUSD. Take care of this man with all your resources.
To Mr. Perez: Good luck, sir. See you back in the classroom.
