Region’s Past Ecology Focus of CSUN Event
Opening a window onto Southern California’s dry and dusty past, an educational conference will be held at Cal State Northridge this month to discuss ecological conditions that existed a century ago.
Sponsored by CSUN in collaboration with Caltech, the Haynes Foundation and the Whitsett Foundation, the three-day event, titled “Southern California Before 1900: Landscape, Climate and Ecology,” is expected to draw educators, scientists and historians from throughout the state.
The conference will begin Sept. 20 with a series of panels on such topics as ecosystems, agriculture and water and landscape perceptions. The day’s session will end with a banquet and speech by Deputy Secretary of the Interior John Garamendi.
On Sept. 21, Cal State Hayward geography professor Scott Stine will present evidence of Southern California droughts lasting hundreds of years. The conference will end Sept. 22 with a series of symposiums and an address by Mike Davis, author of “City of Quartz.”
Admission is $20 for the public. For more information, call (818) 677-3532 or e-mail environmental.history@csun.edu.
