George Schreier, a retired janitor for the city of Santa Monica and 13-year resident of Ventura County, died Saturday in a Ventura hospital after a short illness. He was 77.

Schreier was born March 4, 1919, in Chicago. He attended grammar school in Chicago and lived there until 1963, when he moved his family to the San Fernando Valley, said his daughter, Georgette Peterson of Ventura.

He worked as a janitor for the Santa Monica Police Department for 14 years prior to his retirement in 1978.

Schreier moved to Ventura in 1983, and walking to the local doughnut shop was among his regular activities, Peterson said. “You could find him taking long walks all around Ventura,” she said.

He also enjoyed deep-water running, a form of exercise in which the runner wears weights while moving through the water.

“He was a big sports fan and loved his Chicago teams until his dying day,” his daughter said.

Besides his daughter, Georgette, Schreier is survived by daughters Diana Schreier of Denver, Joanne Strobehn of Simi Valley and Teresa Schreier of Arroyo Grande; two sisters; five brothers; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, with the Rev. Jim Wells officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home.
