Ex-Official Accused in 1991 Slaying of Politician

The Belgian judiciary arrested former regional minister Alain Van der Biest in connection with the slaying of socialist politician Andre Cools five years ago. Belgian media said Van der Biest--formerly minister for interior affairs of Wallonia, the French-speaking southern part of Belgium--had been detained following testimony by Van der Biest’s former secretary, Richard Taxquet, also under arrest.
