Gunman Kills His Ex-Girlfriend, Self

A gunman shot and killed his pregnant teenage former girlfriend after taking hostages and waging a standoff with police for several hours and then killed himself, authorities said. Three hostages also were shot and wounded, police said. The standoff began about 7:30 a.m. in Brooklyn, N.Y., when James Parker, 24, arrived at his former girlfriend’s apartment, began firing a gun and took the 10 occupants captive, police said. Some of the hostages were children, said police, who arrived and began negotiating with the gunman. About 11 a.m. the woman, identified as Danielle DiMedici, 17, began shouting to police: “You must get in here because he’s going to kill everybody,” said Deputy Police Commissioner Tosano Simonetti. As police entered, the gunman shot DiMedici and himself.
