The plants and animals that live in the Earth’s darkest environments are the focus of an exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.

“In the Dark” explores the worlds of a forest at night, a limestone cave, the ocean depths, life found beneath a typical backyard and how humans have adapted to the dark.

There are interactive displays for kids--and adults--to tinker with, such as the computer game “Robomite” in which children help navigate a termite through the dark underground.

Health/Medicine

* Citrus College will host the seventh annual seminar for parents with disabled children Sept. 28. Workshops include sessions on children with HIV and AIDS, premature infants and children with autism. Call (818) 914-8560.

Science for Kids

* Children can take part in a simulated fossil excavation, visit the laboratory of the George C. Page Museum of La Brea Discoveries or spend a night with the dinosaurs in a sleepover at the Natural History Museum’s Dinosaur Hall in workshops throughout September and October. Call (213) 774-3534.

Science and Journalism

* Caltech will bring together top journalists and researchers to discuss issues affecting how science is communicated to the general public in a one-day symposium on “Science and Journalism: A Marriage of Opposites,” on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium. Keynote speaker will be Miles O’Brien, CNN science and technology anchor. Panelists include Caltech chemistry professor Jacqueline Barton, San Jose Mercury News science reporter Glenda Chui, NBC producer Tony Dill, NPR executive producer Robert Ferrante, Los Angeles Times science and medicine editor Joel Greenberg and Caltech’s Koepfli professor of humanities, Daniel Kevles.
