Pawn Shop Gets Approval to Open

A pawn shop has won permission to open on Beach Boulevard near McFadden Avenue after the Police Department withdrew its earlier objections.
The city’s Planning Commission had approved Crossroads Pawn Shop’s business plan last month, but the City Council wanted to review it after police raised questions about cars and guns being sold there.
“Our main concerns were about the pawning of autos and firearms,” Police Det. Tom Rackleff said. “But they’ve agreed to remove that from the proposal, and that satisfies us.”
Crossroads owner Florence Irwin said she would accept firearms as loan collateral, but agreed that the guns would not be resold at the store.
Council members said they were concerned about sales of stolen property if a pawn shop opened in the neighborhood, which already has a liquor store, a bar and two motels where police say narcotics activities have been reported.
