Cheney, Murdock in Senior Tennis Event
NEWPORT BEACH — Dodo Cheney and Corkie Murdock, the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the 70-plus age group, head a list of 60 women set to compete in the National Senior Hardcourt Tennis Championships today through Oct. 5 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Cheney, 80, who won the Australian Open singles title in 1938, has won more than 260 U.S. national titles in a career that has spanned 70 years. The La Jolla resident is also the top-ranked singles player in her age group.
Murdock, of Los Angeles, teamed with Cheney 11 years ago and together they have been ranked No. 1 in the country for the last 10 years, winning tournaments on grass, clay, hardcourts and indoors.
Preliminary matches begin at 10 a.m. today through Thursday; the semifinals are scheduled for Oct. 4 starting at 8:30 a.m., and the finals begin at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 5.
