A 49-year-old man died hours after he was shot when he surprised a vandal attempting to set fire to his son’s car, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

James Beaudoin Jr. walked outside his home in the 2600 block of East Avenue J-10 at 9:15 p.m. Saturday to take the trash out, said Deputy Bob Killeen. He was shot in the head when a man trying to set fire to a car belonging to Beaudoin’s son opened fire, Killeen said.

Beaudoin was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.

A white car with at least three occupants was seen leaving the area after the shooting, but Killeen said investigators had no description of the suspect or suspects.

Killeen said it was not known why the man was attempting to set the car on fire.
