Jason Bernard; Character Actor in Television Series

Jason Bernard, a character actor who appeared in several television series and was a 1996 CableACE award nominee for his performance in “Sophie and the Moonhanger,” died of an apparent heart attack while driving in Hollywood, police said. He was 58.

He died Friday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, about an hour after an accident, said Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the coroner’s office. An autopsy was pending.

Bernard was nominated last month as a best supporting actor in a movie or miniseries for his performance in “Sophie and the Moonhanger” on the Lifetime Channel. He played Deputy Inspector Marquette on the police drama “Cagney & Lacey” in 1982-83, Fletch in the 1983 adventure series “High Performance”and the boss Mr. Bracken in the sitcom “Herman’s Head” in 1991-92.
