Airport Near Kabul Under Rocket Attack
Rockets hit an airport northeast of Kabul as diplomats crisscrossed the nation trying to prevent a full-scale battle for the capital. The rocket barrage came from an area where ousted government soldiers were fiercely battling with their Taliban rivals, who captured Kabul more than three weeks ago. Taliban forces retaliated with bombing raids on Jabal os Saraj, the headquarters of deposed military chief Ahmed Shah Masoud, about 40 miles north of Kabul. Both sides said they would accept a Pakistani-brokered cease-fire but set conditions for any agreement.
