City Council Opposes Proposition 218
Saying that the passage of Proposition 218 would cost Brea nearly $500,000 a year, the City Council has passed a resolution opposing the Nov. 5 ballot measure.
Supporters of the initiative say that it would benefit taxpayers by requiring an election before any taxes or assessments could be levied. Other assessed fees, such as those for police and fire services, would be prohibited.
But officials in Brea and other areas argue that the measure is flawed because, among other problems, it would grant voting power to property owners and noncitizens based on the size of their land holdings, and would exempt renters from voting on such issues.
