School Offers an Education for Parents

Parents of some Woodland Hills and West Hills students will be going back to school Friday for a morning of workshops and lectures.

The presentations are designed to familiarize parents with school curriculum and teach them ways to help their children with their schoolwork.

Elementary and middle schools that feed El Camino Real High School will have a pupil-free day to enable teachers and administrators to attend. The colloquium will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Hale Middle School, 23830 Califa St.

“The main reason for this is articulation among the three grade levels,” said Hale Assistant Principal Jim Avallone.

“Many times the elementary school is doing one thing, the junior high another and the high school something else. This is across the line, so we all can be involved in the same articulation.”

The workshops are free and open to the public. They include “How to Talk to Your Teenager,” “Laughter for the Health of It” and “Sentence Expansion and Performing Arts in the Classroom.”

Parents are invited, Avallone said, because they are a major component of the education process. “These are things parents should know,” he said.

Participants will be able to take two midmorning workshop sessions. Some of the workshops are geared toward teachers and administrators, while others are designed for parents or anyone who deals with children.

The seven participating schools are El Camino Real High School, Hale Middle School and Woodlake Avenue, Calabash Street, Welby Way, Lockhurst Drive and Pomelo Drive elementary schools.
