Dig this: You could say her TV debut was a smash when, as a freshman, Tiffany Neumeier spiked a ball so hard she nearly knocked out a reporter.

Of course, it was partially set-up, with the reporter egging her on.

“The guy said, ‘I bet I could dig you . . . hit it at me as hard as you can,’ ” said Neumeier, a junior outside hitter on the Nevada women’s volleyball team.

After she gave him, in volleyball lingo, a “facial,” the reporter retracted his boast. “OK,” he said, “maybe I can’t dig you.”

The 1992 Southern Section Division IV player of the year for La Canada High, Neumeier has since achieved several media-worthy highlights.

With 1,155 kills in her career, she needs 18 to move into second place on the school’s all-time list. The record, 1,317, is well within her reach.

She has been most valuable player of three tournaments this season.
