Boon-doggle: Matt Boone, an infielder from Villa Park High, has made a commitment to Pepperdine. Boone is the youngest son of Bob Boone, manager of the Kansas City Royals.

Cal State Northridge gained commitments from two more baseball players--Daniel Martinez, a 6-5, 235-pound right-handed pitcher from Oxnard College and Rio Mesa High, and Matt Pesso, a second baseman from Royal High.

Northridge also has commitments from infielders Nick Garcia of Banning High and Brandon Martin of Fontana High, and left-handed pitcher Darren Murphy of Grossmont College.

Kennedy High pitcher Sandra Durazo, The Times’ 1996 Valley player of the year in softball, has committed to San Diego State.

Durazo led the Golden Cougars to the Northwest Valley Conference and City Section 4-A championships last season.

Durazo had a record of 18-2, a 0.47 earned run average and 237 strikeouts in 149 innings.

Plus-minus: Junior wide receiver Brent Pantell of Harvard-Westlake, is out for the season after suffering a separated left shoulder Saturday night against St. Francis.

Wide receiver Justin Childs, out a week with a concussion, is expected to play Saturday against Chaminade.

Handcheck: A bad night for Kennedy High almost got worse.

The Golden Cougars lost tailback Jaret Harris to a broken leg in the second quarter of Friday’s 36-29 loss to Taft.

Kennedy wide receiver Aaron Lewis felt pain in his hand after the game and feared it was broken but X-rays were negative.
