City Acts to Boost Business in Old Town

After months of planning and review by an advisory group of residents and merchants, the Camarillo City Council, sitting as the Community Development Commission, has approved a series of moves designed to boost sales along the historic Old Town section of Ventura Boulevard.

Specifically, the commission approved preparation of a market analysis to determine needs for the area and the hiring of a special consultant to advise commissioners on the neighborhood’s future.

The panel also laid out a series of goals for the aging commercial neighborhood, including the elimination of blighted areas, encouraging private-sector investment and expanding retail opportunities.

Planning Director Matthew A. Boden said attracting new retail shops to the Ventura Boulevard area is key to the success of the revitalization efforts now underway.

Merchants have complained for years that the neighborhood has been deteriorating and losing customers to newer shopping centers.

The council approved the redevelopment district earlier this year to help raise money for new projects in the area. Under the program, money will be available for business loans and public projects designed to lure customers.
