A 12-year-old crime buster has been honored by the City Council amid rousing applause from residents in the council audience.

Brian Gardner smiled broadly as Mayor Walter K. Bowman recently presented him a council resolution commending his crime-fighting actions last summer.

On Aug. 7, about 11:50 a.m., Gardner saw an unfamiliar bicycle parked in front of his neighbor’s house. Investigating further, Gardner found the neighbor’s front door kicked in. He then ran to his house and called 911, alerting police.

Police rushed to the scene and arrested a suspect exiting the neighbor’s house. The burglary suspect was carrying a bag of stolen jewelry and cash, police said.

The council’s resolution praised Gardner’s quick-thinking action in the case, saying he displayed “prudence, caution and remarkable composure.”
