The San Antonio Spurs put forward Charles Smith on the injured list because of arthritis in his right knee.

Smith has sat out the last 17 games suffering from osteoarthritis. The nine-year veteran has appeared in only four games this season, averaging 8.0 points and 5.3 rebounds.

To fill his roster spot, the team signed forward Stephen Howard, who averaged a league-leading 25.6 points and ranked fourth with 9.5 rebounds a game with the Oklahoma City Cavalry of the Continental Basketball Assn.
