Calendar Sale Will Raise Funds for Group

In an effort to raise money for youth programs in the area, the Sunland-Tujunga Community Coordinating Council is selling 1997 community calendars.

The calendars feature photographs and information about a different community organization each month, said Joanne Wright, a member of the council and the outreach coordinator for Bridge Focus, an alcohol- and drug-abuse prevention organization that is one of the featured groups.

“The idea was to come up with a calendar that helps residents become more acquainted with the resources that are available in the community,” said Wright.

“All of the proceeds will be donated to the Sunland-Tujunga Youth Project.”

A panel of students from Verdugo Hills High School and Mt. Gleason Junior High School recently began meeting to decide how they would like the money to be spent, Wright said.

On Feb. 5, the students will present their recommendations to the coordinating council.

Wright said a lack of youth activities in the area was the motivation for the fund-raiser.

“Instead of the adults telling the kids what to do, we wanted to hear from them what they want,” said Wright. “The proceeds from the calendar probably won’t pay for the whole thing, but it will be an important start.”

Twelve groups paid $50 each to reserve a month in the calendar, including the local YMCA and Rotary Club, Friends of the Library, Little Landers Historical Society and the McGroarty Cultural Arts Center.

Calendars cost $2.50 each and will be available through the end of this month at the Sunland-Tujunga YMCA, McGroarty Cultural Arts Center, Friends of the Library, Verdugo Hills Chamber of Commerce, and Bolton Hall Museum.
