The $1.4-billion Disneyland Resort project is, in Mayor Tom Daly’s words, the “big Kahuna” for the city this year, but numerous smaller projects also will be launched in the coming months.

Work will begin on a new clubhouse at the golf course, a city park near Betsy Ross Elementary School and a police substation in Anaheim Hills. Construction also will begin on a downtown community center, which will include the city’s first public gymnasium.

A beautification project along Brookhurst Street will start this year, along with the addition of some fountains and a children’s play area in the downtown redevelopment area.

Improvement work also will start on the Lemon Street and Harbor Boulevard interchanges of the Riverside Freeway, and the fifth year in an $8-million-per-year underground utility project will get going.

Anaheim’s projects, which also include expansions of the Convention Center and of Anaheim Stadium, will cost more than $4 billion over the next five years, an estimate Daly called “conservative.” Over the next 20 years, the projects will create about 180,000 new jobs, he said.

“This is an exciting time for Anaheim,” Daly said. “We’re finally going to start seeing the payoff of our work and efforts and years of planning.”
