It’s Sweet for L.A. Baptist
NORTH HILLS — Guard Jermaine Sweet had 20 points and 12 assists to lead L.A. Baptist over Holy Martyrs, 71-40, Thursday night in a first-round game of the L.A. Baptist basketball tournament.
Center Amir Law and forwards Aaron Davis and Tim Maynard each added eight points for the Knights (9-1).
L.A. Baptist took a 9-0 lead and limited the Armens (5-5) to four points in the second quarter, taking a 35-14 halftime lead. The Knights were successful in transition, finishing with 20 fast-break baskets.
“We’re at our best when we run the floor,” L.A. Baptist Coach Bob Chevalier said.
Vicken Ohanian scored 13 points for Holy Martyrs.
In other first-round games:
Paraclete 80, Frazier Mountain 50--Josh Foster and Jason Julius each scored 16 points for the Spirits.
Valencia 59, St. Bonaventure 49--Jerrohn Jordan scored 10 points and Matt Cline and Kevin Woods each added nine for the Vikings.
Gabe Gallagher led St. Bonaventure with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Jose Villasenor scored 11.
Carpinteria 66, Poly 62--Willie Wilson scored 18 points and Jonny Lopez added 15 in a losing effort for the Parrots.
Poly (6-5) trailed, 61-60, with 1:07 to play, but turned the ball over on three of its last four possessions.
