Ocean View Jumps Ahead and Hangs On
Ocean View jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three minutes and held on for a 46-41 nonleague girls’ basketball victory over Newport Harbor Friday.
The Seahawks (11-3), the sixth-ranked team in the county, used a full-court press early in the game, forcing the Sailors (7-7) to commit six turnovers, and led, 23-7, at the end of the first quarter. Ocean View’s Anna Lembke scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter.
“We thought we could jump out on them early,” Ocean View Coach Bill Seibert said, “but I was surprised that we jumped out to such a big lead.”
Newport Harbor battled back, however, outscoring Ocean View, 15-8, in the second quarter and trailed, 31-22, at halftime. The Sailors’ Breanna Badorek scored five of her 12 points and held Lembke to only two points in the quarter.
The Sailors continued to chip away at the Seahawks’ lead in the third quarter, again outscoring Ocean View, 14-6, and trimming the lead to 40-36. M.E. Clayton, who was held to only two points in the first half, scored nine points in the quarter for Newport Harbor.
The Sailors managed to cut the Seahawks lead to 44-41 with 18 seconds left in the game, but Lembke scored after an inbounds pass from Jen Tuiolosega to seal the victory.
“I’m happy with the way we played,” said Newport Harbor Coach Bob Dukus. “I’d be really happy if we could knock off a couple of the top teams we play.”
