Flyer Streak Snowballs to 16 Games

Trent Klatt and Mikael Renberg scored goals two minutes apart in the third period as the Flyers rallied to tie the Avalanche, 4-4, Saturday night at Denver and extend the season’s longest unbeaten streak in the NHL to 16 games.

Philadelphia trailed, 4-2, after two periods before coming back and improving to 13-0-3 in the streak.

Klatt reached out to deflect Chris Therien’s slap shot past Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy at 12:01 of the third period, and Renberg tied it with a point-blank rebound after he had redirected a shot by Eric Lindros onto the Colorado goal.

Wayne Gretzky tied a club record with four assists in the second period, leading the New York Rangers to a 6-4 victory over visiting Ottawa at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers got five goals in that period, with the line of Gretzky, Luc Robitaille and Niklas Sundstrom totaling nine points. . . . Mario Lemieux scored twice and had three assists as Pittsburgh extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 7-3 win over Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh. Ron Francis also had two goals and Jaromir Jagr had a goal and assist to raise his career point total to 600. . . . Ray Bourque scored with 36 seconds remaining to lift Boston to a comeback 3-2 victory over visiting Dallas. Bourque shot a 40-footer through a screen to beat rookie goaltender Roman Turek for his fourth goal of the season. . . . Steve Konowalchuk scored with 4:14 remaining in regulation as visiting Washington pulled out a 1-1 tie with Hartford. . . . Jocelyn Thibault stopped 26 shots and Stephane Richer had a goal and an assist as Montreal extended their season-high unbeaten streak to six with a 3-1 win over the visiting New York Islanders. . . . Mike Sillinger scored two goals--his sixth and seventh--to lead Vancouver in the Canucks’ 7-3 victory against Toronto at Vancouver. The Canucks had a balanced offensive attack, with five other players scoring against the Maple Leafs. . . . Calgary scored three consecutive goals in a 4-3 victory at San Jose, rallying from a 3-1 deficit after two periods. Jonas Hoglund scored the game-winning goal at 15:38 of the third period.
