‘Cuervotivity’

Re “Tequila’s Sunset?” Jan. 2:

The only thing remotely offensive about the sculpture by Javier Vazquez on Doheny and Santa Monica is its sponsor. (And the title: “ ... Cuervotivity ... “ C’mon!) Otherwise, I have enjoyed it immensely on my frequent visits to West Hollywood. By the way, has anyone looked at Absolut (vodka) lately?

It is perfectly understandable that the great majority of the people of West Los Angeles should reject the Jazzamoart piece. Modern art (abstract, conceptual, avant-garde) is, by its very nature, unpopular. The public will reject it, ipso facto. Public art, if it is to be embraced by the great majority, cannot rely on the characteristics of modern art for its popular appeal. It cannot contradict the notion of what most people think beauty should be.

Modern art--inherently--feels at home in museums of modern art where the people who populate such places (a small minority of the total) normally reject popular art. In reality, it is not a question of aesthetics that fuels this controversy. It is a sociological question.
