Improvement Project Begins at College
Santa Monica College is launching a $2.8-million renovation of the former Madison school site, a satellite facility that houses the college’s Center for the Humanities and other programs.
The yearlong project, which is scheduled to begin Jan. 26, will include asbestos removal, heating and air conditioning installation and removal of barriers to make the two-story stucco building accessible to the disabled.
An influx of state-deferred maintenance money, federal funds and bond money from Proposition T, a local capital improvement bond passed in 1992, are propelling the much-needed rehabilitation of the 72-year-old building, according to Bruce Smith, college spokesman.
Since 1989, Santa Monica College has leased the former elementary school on Arizona Street from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District to accommodate campus growth.
During construction, the Center for the Humanities and other programs will be relocated to the main campus. The school’s nursing program will move outside to portable classrooms on the parking lot and a student child-care program will be relocated to a nearby YWCA on Pico Boulevard.
