Household Hazardous Waste to Be Collected

A three-day hazardous waste collection program sponsored by the city’s Department of Public Works will begin today in Van Nuys.

The free service, which is by appointment only, is designed to “allow people to properly dispose of household material,” said Eric Rose, district director for Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick.

Products such as paint and solvents, aerosol cans, garden chemicals, car batteries, oil, pesticides, fertilizers and pool cleaners will be collected. Items that will not be accepted included radioactive material such as those that come from X-ray machines, explosives, biological waste and tires.

Rose said the products collected from these sites are either recycled or taken to a special area designed for holding household waste.

The collection site will be set up at a Van Nuys location from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., today through Saturday. Those who would like to drop off products must call for the exact location and for an appointment at (800) 988-6942.

The next three-day hazardous waste collection program will begin Jan. 30 in Canoga Park.
