Agoura Upset a Late Show

Marcus Helfman scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half to help Agoura High pull away for a 61-45 upset over Channel Islands in a Marmonte League boys’ basketball game Wednesday night at Agoura High.

Charles Merricks scored 12 points for Channel Islands (10-3, 0-3 in league), the fifth-ranked team in The Times’ area poll.

John Barry scored 10 points and Helfman had 16 rebounds for the Chargers (5-6, 2-1).

Royal 57, Newbury Park 49--Ryan Nielsen had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Nick Flanagan added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Highlanders (9-6, 1-2) in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Simi Valley 76, Thousand Oaks 47--Branduinn Fullove scored 24 points and Rafael Berumen and Brett Michel each scored 20 for the host Pioneers (13-0) in a Marmonte League game.

Crespi 61, Alemany 48--Joe Vallone scored 12 points and John Bird scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter for the Celts (5-8, 1-0) in a Mission League opener at Crespi.

St. Francis 64, Loyola 35--Chris Brugman scored 20 points, Anton Cunningham added 18 and Anthony Johnson contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Golden Knights (10-5, 1-0) in a Mission League game at Loyola.

Chaminade 52, Notre Dame 44--Brett Brownson scored 14 points for the Eagles (10-3, 1-0) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame (10-7, 0-2).

Granada Hills 48, Van Nuys 46--Desmond Williams’ follow of Leon Pimky’s airball at the buzzer lifted the Highlanders (8-5) at Granada Hills.

Williams led Granada Hills with 14 points. Van Nuys is 5-7.

Cleveland 65, Hamilton 59--Donald Holt had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Cavaliers (12-3) at Cleveland.

San Marcos 71, Ventura 48--Christian Gallagher scored 24 points for the Cougars (7-6, 1-1) in a Channel League game at San Marcos.

Dos Pueblos 77, Hueneme 45--Paul McCrae scored 19 points for the Vikings (3-8, 0-2) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Bell-Jeff 63, Murphy 43--Mike West had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Guards (8-6, 2-0) in a Santa Fe League game at Murphy.

Oak Park 67, Calabasas 58--John Murphy had 22 points and 22 rebounds for the Eagles (10-5) at Oak Park.
