MCI to Cut 1,200 Jobs

MCI Communications Corp. said it will cut 1,200 jobs, or 2.3% of its work force, in an effort to concentrate on its push into the local phone business. The cuts will take place primarily in MCI’s business unit, which accounts for more than half of the company’s $15 billion in annual revenue. MCI, with 52,000 employees, also has been exiting several businesses it no longer considers essential, such as its Internet shopping site and its compact-disc-by-phone service. The move comes as MCI prepares for its combination with British Telecommunications. British Telecom said it would buy MCI, the No. 2 long-distance phone company in the U.S.
