Servite Tightens Up to Beat Tustin

Servite used a tight defense in the fourth quarter Friday to defeat Tustin, 57-41. The loss was the Tillers’ first in Golden West League boys’ basketball.

Tustin (11-5, 1-1), which entered the league three seasons ago, was undefeated the first two seasons.

Servite led, 45-41, to start the fourth quarter then used defensive pressure and a spread offense to outscore Tustin, 12-0.

Stephen Hogan made two of his four three-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points.

Steve Shea had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Dennis Wisco added 14 points for Servite (12-5, 1-1).

In another Golden West League game:

Westminster 51, Saddleback 33--Westminster (8-9, 1-1) fell behind, 12-8, in the first quarter, but outscored Saddleback (8-9, 1-1), 24-8, in the second and third quarters.

In the Academy League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 72, Fairmont 26--Andrew Jennings led Capistrano Valley Christian (9-6, 1-0) with 22 points.

St. Margaret’s 73, St. Michael’s 36--Josh Del Pino scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Alex Huff scored 15 points for St. Margaret’s (5-7, 1-0).

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 66, Hemet Hamilton 59--Briklyn Wuich scored 24 points and David Mack and Chad White each scored 12 for Southern California Christian (9-3, 1-1).

In the Century League:

Orange 61, El Modena 52--Juan Dotson scored 20 points and had nine rebounds as Orange defeated El Modena (0-1 in league). Steve Lein scored 17 points for Orange (12-3, 1-0).

Villa Park 85, Foothill 37--Mike Vogeding scored 23 and Eric Chenowith had 20 for Villa Park (12-3, 1-0).

Santa Ana Valley 46, Canyon 32--Tim Werdel had 12 points for Santa Ana Valley.

In the Empire League:

Katella 51, Cypress 43--Katella (1-0) battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit and outscored Cypress (9-7, 0-1), 37-18, in the second half. Kenny Moreno led all scorers with 21 points for Katella.

Century 51, Kennedy 42--Terrail Zoller had 16, Chris Lopez 14 and Ricky Lopez 11 for host Century (9-7, 1-0).

El Dorado 57, Loara 51--Ryan Tenpas scored 12 points and had nine rebounds for El Dorado (14-3, 1-0).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 45, Buena Park 26--Fullerton (9-8, 1-0) didn’t allow Buena Park (9-9, 0-1) to score more than seven points in any quarter and Brandon Rosenthal scored 18 points and shot 80% from the field for the Indians.

Troy 53, Sunny Hills 39--Jerry Inzuza scored 17 points as Troy defeated Sunny Hills (6-10, 0-1). Scott Blake and Davis Sun each scored 12 points for the Warriors.

Steve Swagerty scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds for Sunny Hills.

Sonora 101, La Habra 58--Jeffrey Berokoff had 27 points and four steals for visiting Sonora (14-1, 1-0), which made 28 of 39 free throws. Ben Jones also had 23 points and 14 rebounds for Sonora, which led at the half, 51-28.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 57, Rancho Alamitos 51--Down, 22-7, in the second quarter, Bolsa Grande tied the score at 39 when Son Tan made a three-point shot. Duc Nguyen scored 23 points for Bolsa Grande.

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 48, Brethren Christian 37--Jacob Brown scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Brethren Christian (7-9, 0-1).

Calvary Chapel 71, Cerritos Valley Christian 54--Calvary Chapel (13-4, 1-0) outscored Valley Christian (7-9, 0-1), 20-6, in the third quarter. Kevin Falconer had 19 points and nine assists to lead Calvary Chapel.

Orange Lutheran 66, Ontario Christian 62--Orange Lutheran (5-7, 1-0) outscored Ontario Christian, 21-17, in the fourth quarter, breaking a 45-45 tie. Matt Erickson scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Orange Lutheran.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 68, Fountain Valley 59 (OT)--Pardeep Brar and Roger Dereszynski had key rebounds as Marina scored the first nine points in overtime and went on to defeat Fountain Valley (5-11, 0-1). Dereszynski scored four points in overtime off offensive rebounds.

Ben Rogers, who scored 17 points for Fountain Valley, scored six points in the fourth quarter as the Barons came back to tie the score, 56-56, at the end of regulation.

Donald Lank scored 39 points for Marina (13-5, 1-0) and had five points in overtime. Lank made 17 of 24 field goals.

Scott Rivera also scored 17 points for Fountain Valley.

Los Alamitos 66, Esperanza 60--Matt Komer scored 12 points and had seven rebounds for third-ranked Los Alamitos. The Griffins (14-2, 1-0) outscored Esperanza 18-9 in the first quarter.

Ricardo Garibay had 18 points for Los Alamitos.
