Dana Hills Shuts Out No. 5 Cougars

Dana Hills scored three second-half goals within about 11 minutes to upset fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley, 3-0, in a South Coast League boys’ soccer game Friday at Dana Hills.

Brett Simon scored 11 minutes into the second half. Victor Compean scored seven minutes later and Juan Diaz-De Leon got his goal about two minutes after that for Dana Hills (3-4, 1-0).

“We played with emotion and took them out of their game,” Dana Hills Coach John Gunderson said.

Capistrano Valley is 10-3-2, 0-1.

In other South Coast League games:

Mission Viejo 4, Mater Dei 4--Bret Corbin’s goal in the 77th minute salvaged a tie for second-ranked Mater Dei (11-0-2), which also benefited from an own-goal. Mater Dei trailed at halftime, 2-0, but scored three consecutive goals. Sean Branson tied it, 3-3, and Brent Shoji gave the Diablos (4-3-4, 1-0) visions of an upset in the 76th minute before Corbin matched it.

San Clemente 3, Trabuco Hills 2--A.J. Jaramillo scored his third goal of the game with 15 seconds left in the second half for sixth-ranked San Clemente (10-0-5, 1-0). Jorge Hernandez had the assist on Jaramillo’s winning goal.

In the Century League:

El Modena 1, Orange 0--Sergio Reyes of El Modena scored his first goal of the season on a header assisted by Martin Cherrington to help upset third-ranked Orange (11-2-3, 0-1). Sergio Viera had 10 saves for El Modena (8-1-2, 1-0).

Foothill 1, Villa Park 0--Drew Stewart scored in the 35th minute for the visiting Knights (3-4-1, 1-0).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 3, Loara 0--Kenny Simons, Tom Weeda and Brian Depaola scored for host El Dorado (13-3-3, 1-0).

Cypress 3, Katella 0--Matt Resor had five saves for host Cypress (12-2-1, 1-0).

Century 3, Kennedy 1--Victor Guerrero scored two first-half goals for Century (3-5-4, 1-0). Salvador Garibay also scored in the 74th minute for the Centurions.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 1, Sonora 1 (OT)--Chris Semier scored in the 77th minute to send the game into overtime for Sonora (3-7-1, 0-0-1). Scott Belon scored in the 55th minute for Fullerton (4-6-2, 0-0-1).

Sunny Hills 2, La Habra 1--Tom Kim and Andy Paizano scored in the first half for Sunny Hills.

Pacifica 3, Los Amigos 1--Nathan Kolano, Dande Kunze and Matt Reis scored for host Pacifica (4-4-1, 1-0-1).

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 8, Downey Cavalry Chapel 0--Bryant Wolfberger and Jesse Barnett each scored three goals for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-4, 1-1).

Calvary Chapel 3, Whittier Christian 1--Tim Metzger scored two second-half goals to lead Calvary Chapel (4-4-2, 2-0). Josh Miller scored one goal and assisted Metzger on his second goal.

Orange Lutheran 1, Cerritos Valley Christian 0--Eric Van De Zilver scored in the second half for host Orange Lutheran (9-2-1, 2-0).

Woodbridge 1, El Toro 0--Shane Johnson scored in the first minute on an assist from Kevin Friedland and Doug Allan made nine saves for his eighth shutout of the season. Eighth-ranked Woodbridge is 10-2-2, 1-0. Josh Saunders had 11 saves for seventh-ranked El Toro (9-3-3, 0-1).

Newport Harbor 1, Santa Margarita 0--Tobin Junowhich scored late in the game for Newport Harbor on an assist from Jessie Cortes.

Esperanza 2, Los Alamitos 1 (OT)--Mike Murphy of fourth-ranked Esperanza (15-1-1, 1-0) scored the deciding goal with two minutes to play in overtime.

Fountain Valley 3, Marina 1--Robbie Kaessner, Ryan Futagaki and David Ross scored for host Fountain Valley (9-2-2, 1-0).
