Rogan, Sherman in Washington

* Re “Capitol Gains,” Jan. 8.

James Bornemeier successfully captures the quintessential difference between the Valley’s two freshmen congressmen. The one, James Rogan--a “smooth (why ‘smooth’ Mr. Bornemeier?) former judge,” the other, Brad Sherman--a self-described “recovering nerd.”

Rogan, the former majority leader in the state Assembly, a family man, traveled cross-country in a rented van and chose an office with a historical aura (one of LBJ’s). Not too politically correct, but a reflection of the man’s sense of continuity. He will live close to Washington so as to have time with his children.

The other? A CPA, Harvard Law School graduate, member of the Board of Equalization, is described by his friends as having lowered his public esteem when becoming a tax collector and politician. His preparation also included his first love of Mad magazines and telling political jokes.

Thanks to Frank Finkenstaedt’s photos of their respective offices, we know who’s ready to represent constituents. One is organized and ready for business. Sherman’s office is empty save for his girlfriend.

Multiple choice question: a. Glad Rogan represents my district; b. Sherman reflects my opinions; c. Tony Beilenson made a great choice; d. Sherman’s really being facetious.
