Bus Fares May Be Cut for Student Tutors

Some Moorpark students may get a break on city bus fare, under a proposal the City Council will review Wednesday.

The local school district has requested that the city offer a reduced bus fare for middle school students who are tutoring children at Peach Hill elementary school and need a ride to the campus. The city manager’s office has recommended that any student participating in a district-sponsored program pay 50 cents for a one-way bus ride, compared to the 75-cent fare they currently pay.

According to the school district, the change would cost the city about $600 each year. Kristin Deike, who coordinates the tutoring program, told city officials in a December letter that the district has been unable to give the tutors rides on its own buses due to scheduling problems.

The council will also discuss giving the reduced fare to all Moorpark school district students. That move, however, would cost the city an estimated $1,800 and is not recommend by city staff members.
