A Los Angeles-bound commuter train struck an ambulance that had encroached upon its tracks in downtown Long Beach Monday, causing minor injuries to about a dozen commuters, authorities said.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said the Blue Line train was traveling at 15 to 20 mph when it collided with a Bowers ambulance at 7th Street and Pacific Avenue about 1 p.m.

No one in the ambulance was injured, but 14 train passengers were taken to hospitals after they complained of neck and back pains, police said.

Long Beach Police Sgt. Jim Leinen said the ambulance driver was apparently trying to make a U-turn in front of the northbound train. He added that the ambulance was out of service at the time.
