Yip’s Three-Pointer at Buzzer Gives Los Amigos a League Victory Over La Quinta

Darryl Yip hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to lift Los Amigos to a 40-39 Garden Grove League victory over La Quinta.

Drew White put La Quinta (9-8, 1-1) up by two with six seconds remaining, but Yip took the inbounds pass and went the length of the court to hit the game-winning shot. Mike Wahl led Los Amigos (8-8, 2-1) with 12 points. Scott Ogilvie scored 13 for La Quinta.

In other Garden Grove League games:

Garden Grove 66, Bolsa Grande 54--Visiting Garden Grove outscored Bolsa Grande, 20-12, in the third quarter to take a 50-40 lead. Duc Nguyen finished with a game-high 23 for Bolsa Grande. In the first half, Nguyen was four of four on three pointers, made both his two-point attempts and his only free throw to score with 17 points.

Eric Kenneth had 16 of his 21 in the first half for Garden Grove (7-10, 2-0). Bolsa Grande is 7-10, 1-2.

Pacifica 80, Rancho Alamitos 47--Jeff Davidson and Brad Mastros each scored 15 points and Gary Wallace had 13 for Pacifica, which jumped out to a 34-8, first-quarter lead. Pacifica made 25 of 28 free throws. Rancho Alamitos was led by Chris Torina and Hasheem Hicks with 13 points each.

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Bolsa Grande 36, Garden Grove 33--Tied at the half, 14-14, Bolsa Grande (8-6, 2-1) outscored Garden Grove (1-1 in league), 12-4, in the third quarter. Bolsa Grande was led by Jonielle Schmidt and Mary Petrie with nine points each. Katie Werdel scored a game-high 11 points for Garden Grove.

Pacifica 62, Rancho Alamitos 45--The teams combined for 54 fouls and 68 free throws. Mindyn McCurdy had 22 points and Jaymee Pendergast 21 for visiting Pacifica (10-5, 3-0), which outscored Rancho Alamitos, 22-9, in the third quarter to take a 45-21 lead.

La Quinta 46, Los Amigos 40--Lacee Keller scored 14 points and Naydia Aziz added 12 points for La Quinta (2-11, 1-1). Carlee Cleveland grabbed 14 rebounds and Zenab Elachcar had 10 rebounds and 10 points.

In Garden Grove League boys’ soccer:

Pacifica 2, Rancho Alamitos 0--Nathan Kolano had two second-half goals for host Pacifica (5-4-1, 2-0-1).

La Quinta 3, Los Amigos 0--Donny Vargas, Junior Villagrama and Vincente Maldona each scored a goal in the victory for La Quinta (2-4-2, 1-0-1). Los Amigos is 1-7-1, 1-2-0.

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

Garden Grove 4, Bolsa Grande 0--Julie Servin had two goals and two assists in the first half for Garden Grove (4-4-1, 2-0).

In a nonleague girls’ soccer game:

Corona del Mar 3, Orange 0--Lindsey Grubbs stole a pass and raced up the middle of the Orange defense and scored to give visiting Corona del Mar (6-6-2) a 1-0 lead about 23 minutes into the first half.

Grubbs and Heather Marshall added second-half goals for Corona del Mar. Heather Hritz made one save in recording her third shutout of the season.
