Andre Garcia, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound outside linebacker from Sacramento City College, said Wednesday he will sign to play at Cal State Northridge.

“My family lives right down the street from [Northridge],” Garcia said. “I think I can showcase my talents there better.”

Although Garcia is the second player to commit to Northridge since the hiring of Coach Jim Fenwick last week, he was not recruited by Fenwick.

Garcia said that assistant Jeff Kearin, the Matadors’ interim coach before Fenwick was hired, convinced him to attend Northridge.

Penalty box: Paul Bubb, Cal State Northridge’s athletic director, today begins a school-imposed five-day suspension for his role in the cover-up of a football player’s shooting last year, a source said.

The source said Bubb will be able to conduct university business from home or the road, but will not be paid.

The suspension stems from an August incident in which former football Coach Dave Baldwin lied to reporters about Shayne Blakey’s shooting, saying the running back had undergone an appendectomy.

Bubb, reached while vacationing in Illinois, would not confirm that he is serving the suspension.

New leader: Monty Moorman has been hired as a walk-on softball coach at Kennedy High, Athletic Director Linda Consolo said.
